For information:
Two formal complaints against Lewisham Council and the manner in which the Pedestrian Accident Reduction scheme has been handled by the Council's Highways Department have been lodged with the Local Government Ombudsman. One of these has been lodged by Sydenham Society on behalf of residents throughout the area. The other has been lodged by a local individual.

Local Gov Ombudsman
Sydenham Society has been advised that the Local Government Ombudsman has agreed to investigate our complaint against Lewisham Council.
The complaint is summarised - "that the Council failed to consult residents about the works to the Cobbs Corner roundabout and failed to properly manage the work".
Since our formal complaint was lodged with the LGO the zebra crossing, also part of the Council's scheme, has been shown to be badly designed. Our continued correspondence with the Council (copied to the LGO) includes reference to to the crossing as part of the whole mismanaged scheme.

Still awaited - if the result is as anticipated ie that the design is flawed, I presume the Council will need to tell residents how they are going to remedy the situation - what further "minor modifications" (their favourite phrase) they will employ to make it safe.
Problem is, of course, in the meantime with the crossing closed and the traffic island refuge removed from outside HSBC there is now no pedestrian crossing facility between Cobbs Corner and Newlands Park.
Whatever the outcome of the Site Safety Audit this will probably mean more roadworks and Morrisons are back in Sydenham Road between January and March for more gas connection works. Guess what - after that Lewsiham is going to resurface the road.
Joy, oh joy!
