A very frightening event that could easily have ended in tragedy.

Hopefully very isolated and that it will not unsettle our Muslim community unnecessarily.

Our adult mental health services have been overstretched for years and it is hardly likely to get better. The perpetrator doesn't sound like a well man.

There does seem to be growing disquiet and rising anti-social behaviour generally.
Begging has been on the increase too. There has been a slim Asian man begging frequently outside Sydenham - last week I heard him openly threaten a commuter. There was also a beggar on the Overground train this evening. It is intimidating.
Not sure what the answers are....

I've encountered him, all mouth and no trousers. He came right up in my face very threateningly around 9pm one night.. I looked him in the eye and said "I suggest you back the f**k* up... Now." he apologized and moved on. I think he tries to pick out easy/unconfident looking targets.

How had the beggar got past the entrance gates , or did he have a ticket

Surely not as annoying as the people who walk down each carriage putting a trash item next to each person , then collecting the items or money 5 mins later.

Why has this turned into a thread about beggars?

Probably as I was writing about my general disquiet about the increase in anti-social behaviour on, at or near train stations.

In my view, failure to deal appropriately with low level crime and the perception of what is acceptable behaviour leads to an increase in more serious crimes. So not a thread hijack really, as the anti-social activities I mentioned are outside or on the trains.

I didn't mean to detract from the seriousness of this particular incident and hope the injured party makes a speedy and full recovery.

Ive seen the chap hassling people outside Sydenham when they buy tickets. my partner gave him a few quid before and he said it wasn't enough and said he would walk him to an ATM to get more. staff at station just stared and did nothing
