Would like to know what people think of the blue mountain cafe now its been up and running for a while? Love or hate it? any regulars and what do u keep going back for?

I wonder that seeing as you are asking this question and it's your first post that maybe it's a bit of market research. Perhaps the rumours are true.

Every time I go in it's busy. Coffee is good, cakes are yummy, soup and lunches are very tasty.

It has been said that it is more expensive than Sugahill but Sugahill seems to be busy, too. I am happy to use both cafes and think they are a very welcome addition to Sydenham.

I am also known to have had the odd bacon sarnie at the Hill Top Cafe and at Sema's, too.

I was in there yesterday. The food and service was lovely and seemed very reasonably priced. I wish I had the chance to go more often.

There was also lots of very fresh looking fruit and veg on display which I didn't realise they sold til now.

I make a point of looking in every time I walk past BM. It is usually full or nearly full. Which is the problem for me - I like a cafe where I can stretch out with a paper and waste a little time. So BM either have to get bigger or less busy for my custom.

The coming of spring and the departure of British Gas will make the outside a great option again.

I also use Sugahill and recently had my first outing to Milano. Very small but very friendly welcome. Its nice to have a choice and the market for coffee appears to have exploded in Sydenham which is very good news.

I like th BM cafe. Like Stuart said, it's nearly always full, which can be a problem.

The food in BM is good quality, although not cheap. we go there for a treat.

I also like Sugarhill, their food is a little different but good quality and it too is a nice place to be. Their hot chocolate (sugahills) is REALLY good, I implore anyone here to try it.

Like Muddy waters, before trying to eat a bit healthier I too have been known to pop into Semas and Hilltop cafe. They are cheaper but the quality isn't as good, but are still nice and rightfully occupy our highstreet. I just wish they looked better inside and out.

Hopefully we will have more places to go to besides these in the future with more diverse shops for everyone.

Has anyone been to Milano? I alway pass it but have never been in yet and it's never mentioned in here.

thank you all for replying it was a bit of research, as im a new to the 'cafe' world, would like to know which r best in the area... it does get really busy, the hours to avoid r between 1 and 2, where service is full steam and noone seems to know what they are doing, but the girls do seem to work hard to accomodate everyone and the lovely homemade cakes which i found out r by a woman called maria r worth my treck down from forest hill, what r these 'rumours' u mention?

Thanks for the feedback, Drama Queen. Glad to learn you agree with us that the BMC is not only busy but it does great cakes which are worth the trek from Forest Hill. Spread the news, I say!

Living in Sydenham I do not know of any "rumours" and, anyway, rumour-mongering is something which, I think, should be very strongly discouraged indeed. Rumours, or hints of rumours, have no place on a Town website.

Maria used to work in Zucker and always made the cakes there. I haven't been to Blue Mountain while she has been working there but would definitely vouch for her cakes.

Re BMC I'm afraid my first experience there was not good so I have not repeated it. I go to a cafe to relax and it was anything but so have avoided in order to stay calm and not get annoyed. I have friends who have been separately to me and also not had pleasant visits so have not been back.

Perhaps I will pop back sometime to try the cakes!

Not been myself, but my parents have taken my son, and thought it was brilliant. Top food, nice surroundings, good service.
THe BM should get all the credit it deserves - anything like this on Sydenham high street is more than welcome in my book. The fact that we have two Ladbrokes is just depressing, so more places like this are a step forward.
What would the doom mongers prefer - a Mcsh!t?

I went in for the first time a few weeks ago thinking about stopping for lunch, bought a (very expensive) loaf of bread, and the service was so unfriendly I have not been back since, and do not intend to go back. Not a smile, or a 'please' when the girl asked for the money. Just '£3'. Service is one of the biggest factors for me and I don't want to go somewhere without good service.

Seems it can be hit and miss at the Blue Mountain. The first and most recent times I've been myself and the other half had a nice breakfast and lovely coffee with extremely friendly service.

On the other hand, the second time I went in there we had bad service (they forgot our order), the people next to us received their order only partially warmed up, and they were playing some AWFUL tacky dance music far too loudly which is not what most people want to accompany a restful lunch!! On that occasion the staff in seemed to be all eastern European, whereas on the other two occasions the staff we were served by were English (I'm just saying that to distinguish between what seemed to be two sets of staff, not to make any racially orientated statements by the way!)

They definitely make a nice cappucino in there though, service aside. Happily I can say the same about Sugahill, were the service was also good and friendly.

I use BM a lot, primarily because it's the only place in Sydenham I can buy bread that doesn't collapse as soon as you try to spread anything on it. (I know some people live for super-soft bread, but I'm not one of them.) It's also a great source of jam and a passable source for olives/marinated stuff. The cheese isn't kept well so I still head up to London Bridge for that.

Wellbeing (the health food shop) is really good for jam and spreads too. They stock Rhapsody de Fruit (not sure about spelling, could be Rhapsodie, it is a French jam which is sweetened without sugar I think - all natural) and it keeps for ages, unlike the typical supermarket brands which only keep for six weeks in the fridge. I also like their almond nut butter (no palm oil - just the almond oil like penut butter). But there are loads more to choose from.

Ah, but real peanut butter doesn't contain palm oil, either. At the moment my only decent source of PB is Whole Foods, which really is a trek from here.

Went in there for the second time recently and the food was pretty good, but I have to say the toilet is a disgrace. I have tried to email them directly about this but cannot find an email address for them. They really need to address this - Sugarhill's is far superior, newly decorated and very clean. Whilst BM's was partly broken, shabby and very dirty!
