Can anyone recommend a good place to get internal doors? I know Homebase do them but is there anywhere else? A plumber I used mentioned that you can get them on Sydenham industrial estate and I wondered if someone coudl confirm this.
Try the bathhouse in lower sydenham near sainsbury's. They have original doors and fireplaces. It's a real treasure trove of stuff. Many older properties have larger than average door fr the downstairs rooms which the likes of homebase, B&Q etc don't sell. You will find them in the Bathhouse.
Environmentally friendly too, no trees being cut down.
If you DO buy new doors look for the FSC mark. This means it's from sustainably managed forests. The UK is the highest importer of illegal timber in Europe.

There's a man who has a workshop on Sydenham Park who makes/supplies/strips doors. He's useful if you're looking for antique doors to fit in with the style of your house (not sure if that's what you're after).
Very nice man, we got our doors stripped by him, the prices were very reasonable. I think he's called Jim - anyway you can easily spot his workshop because it usually has loads of doors outside it. Its near the Kirkdale end of Sydenham Park on the left if you're coming from Kirkdale.

Simon, why would you want to scrimp on the cost of replacing your doors? The big solid doors of a victorian house are as much a part of the fabric of the building as the window frames and the tiling at the entrance. I have seen houses spoilt because people have gone for the cheapest option, please think about replacing them with the original type, and if you can't afford to do the job properly right now then save up and wait till you can. In my own house the previous owners have put an 'orrible faux 'Georgian' door (probably cheap from Homebase) in the kitchen - its a 1966 house ! Why they thought it looked any good is beyond me. Anyway its going as soon as we can get round to finding a better one.
Savvy, Im not trying to "scrimp" as you put it, just dont want to overpay! The internal doors we currently have are not originals but have tow glazed sections and are big and heavy. My wife doesn't particularly like them and nor do I really but because they are glazed they do let light into the middle of the house. Becuase they are big, you just cant buy one off the shelf at homebase or B&Q so when I wanted one for one of the reception rooms I went, foolishly, to Select a Door. They said I would have to but an external door and ended up paying over £300 for one fitted, whne they eventually got around to it. Now I need one for the bedroom and dont really want to pay that much. Would like to get a set for the whole house but that is 8 doors!
flippin eck, £300 for an internal door is a lot. That door company have had a bad press on this forum - we went in once and they quoted us over £400 for a 'restaurant' style door (one of those like you see between restaurant and kitchen with the porthole window). They said the metal circular 'frame' around the glass has to be hand made. Anyway we haven't been back and are still looking if anyone knows anywhere.
You do have a dilema, you don't want to lose the light which you get from your doors at the moment, i think you'd really miss it. Dawes for Doors in FH have had good press, you could take advice from them even if you don't end up buying. That's where we're going next, see you there!

I've just had an idea for you.... seeing as your doors are big and solid and expensive to replace, why don't you keep them but remodel them? you could have them stripped back and change the glass to something nicer to look at, you could change the handles and transform them completely. If that cost £150 per door it would still be cheaper than replacing like for like.
In defence of Select A Door, I bought 3No. doors from Select A Door a few months back. The service was fine.
One of their fitters came round (they are all subbie carpenters), installed 2No. fire check and 1No. bathroom doors in my loft conversion. Work was pretty good. Not the 'best' if you know what you're looking at, but pretty good. Up 2 flights of stairs (on your own) with 30min fire rated doors is not bad, fitted for £45 each, £35 for the bathroom.
Dawes Doors was about £100 a door for fitting originally.
DD have dropped their price to £45 per door after I routed the groove for the fire strip.
If you're ordering more than a couple of doors try Distinctive Doors in Sheffield. I bought 6No. Edwardian style oak veneered doors for my loft conversion, new doors for the house. £180 each for FD30, £130 for bathroom. Delivery was about £45 I think.
Dawes Doors wanted over £300 per door + delivery.

I have decided to use Regal Doors- the new shop with the hand painted sign that has opened near the Kent House Road junction. I have engaged them to fit one door for me and if they are any good I will get them back to do the rest. They seem reasonably cheap. i will report back once I have had it done and let you all know how they fared.
