Alcoholics in pubs

Does anyone know if it is legal for an alcoholic to be served in a pub?

Only illegal to serve a drunk person be they an alcoholic or not. Why??

The Licensing Act 2003 made it illegal to serve someone "clearly drunk" or to serve his or her mates if knowingly being bought on behalf of such a person. As far as I can tell, this applies to "licensed premises" so includes shops, clubs etc with licences as well as pubs. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/17/contents

You are correct but if person buying the drinks not drunk then difficult to police.
