I have a garage at the end of my back garden, with access via a dropped kerb (and for those about to complain, the garage has been there since before most of you were even born  ). I can confirm that the police will come and remove your vehicle if you park in front of my garage (I've had 2 cars removed already). It's illegal to block access to someone's property, apart from being downright inconsiderate and selfish to park your car where it is obvious someone will need access to their garage.
Though I do agree that front gardens should not be concreted over - not only does it ruin the street scene, but it's a major factor in causing flash flooding.
If you want to park your car, buy a house with a garage! :)

I feel I'm a bit late joining this discussion, and I'm worried too about coming across as holier than thou. But anywhere - here's what was off street parking when we bought our house - Image

I am still a car driver, even though I don't own a car. I wrote something about this for the Sydenham Society last year, and about Streetcar - http://www.streetcar.co.uk/location.aspx?location=306 which I think is a very good idea. I realise this is easier for me now my kids are teenagers, but what do other people think?

Something I didn't put in the SydSoc piece was that my neighbour have us on their car insurance, and let us use their car from time to time - which is very kind of them. But they seem to think it's such a good idea that they're thinking of getting their off street front garden parking for another Streetcar location.

Tim

It's great to see a front garden the way it should be - attractive and well maintained. I'm sure your neighbourhood looks nicer because of it.

Tim - what a lovely garden!

And I also use Streetcar a lot after my car was stolen 4 years ago. I understand that people in some situations might not like the idea, but for me (no children and don't need to use a car for work), then it's ideal. Lovely new Golfs as well!

I especially like the fact that you can get a car for 2 hours on a Saturday for the shopping, which is almost impossible to do with a rental car. Also, it's so quick to pick up the car - having booked online, you just flash a card at the card reader, and the door pops open - much easier all round.

Only drawback I've found is some driver in Forest Hill who returns the car in an appalling condition (dirty inside and out) but if you report it, then the car gets cleaned.

If you don't need a car every day, or you don't want to buy a second car, (or you don't have children I suppose!), then I highly recommend the scheme!

what a fantastic idea.
I'm selling my car in a couple of months and I'm not going to replace it.
I might sign up, in case I'm ever in need of a car.
