Sydenham Map & Satellite Imagery

Post by admin »

I am experimenting with royalty free GoogleMaps & satellite images of Sydenham. No longer can the OS hold its citizens to ransom with crown copyright!

You can see work in progress here:
http://www.sydenham.org.uk/map.html

Don't forget to click on the satellite/hybrid buttons and zoom into your neighbours gardens...

It is a bit unstable with MS Internet Explorer so I have not connected into the main website. It seems to work better with Firefox. Your experiences would be welcome. I am having a few problems deciphering the API at:
http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/

Anyone like to help?

A good night's sleep and I think I have the hang of the GoogleMap API. So I've decided to make it live and feature it on the frontpage.

I guess that will bottom out any problems!

If you are reporting any - please quote the browser (version if possible), your operating system (Windows XP, MacOS etc) and the power (or age) of your computer.

I'm not too sure how many markers I should put on - would too many obscure the map to much? Any thoughts would be welcome.

well, absolute silence from a "it doesn't work on my browser" ... so - in the interests of feedback - thought I'd just say -

Nice one! I like it - and really nicely integrated into this website. Makes me want to tidy our garden right now.

ps - oops, almost forgot - using Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 - and it works a treat.

Thanks Dave.

I am still having some problems. My main machine blew up so I'm testing it on a couple of 256Mb machines. After loading multiple copies the computers go very sluggish. Feels like the java code has massive memory leaks (is that possible?)

The potential for using GoogleMaps is really impressive. Have you had a look at:
http://www.chicagocrime.org/?

Can you imagine Lewisham/Met released that information to us so we could do the same?

The whole office is now intrigued by the crime stats in Chicago. I can't get them to go back to work!

My rather English response to Chicago crime is Lewisham Planning Applications - so often a viscous assault on our environment!

I have taken four example apps from the current Lewisham Alconet database and mapped them here:
http://www.sydenham.org.uk/plans.html

Click on the marker and you see what the application is. Click on <more> and you go straight to the Lewisham case note page. My idea is to script it so it is updated daily with different views of the data - a miniversion of Chicago Crime.

Anybody interested in planning apps who like to help/advise? And as it would be a non-trivial exercise I think I would be looking for a local business to possibly sponsor it.

Thanks for both of those. I particularly liked the planning map. Very handy.

Planning map

Brilliant!

Any walk around the neighbourhood is inevitably delayed by my girlfriend's fascination with yellow notices ty-wrapped to lamp posts. Your fiendish mash of the Googlemaps API has meant the journey between my home and my first pint of the evening is significantly shorter.

This sort of thing is what the internet is for.

Bloody well done!
