Re: NO, SYDENHAM POST OFFICE IS NOT CLOSING
Thank you for clarification. It is good news that the post office will (edit: is expected to, as a franchise) remain but a hint of bad news if you think "not for the better". We'll have to wait and see.michael wrote: ...[clip]...
So in answer to the shouty thread title "NO, SYDENHAM POST OFFICE IS NOT CLOSING", but it might be changing, and probably not for the better.
The sometimes very lengthy queueing time is my only complaint about it as it currently is. I think it's confusing (until you know) that parcels are collected at 5pm, not the closing time of 5.30pm. Also, I would have thought it was a sufficiently important post office to have a letter post collection later than 5.30pm, but that is a wish list dream.
Re: IS SYDENHAM POST OFFICE CLOSING?
I have to use Beckenham post office for work, and I can assure you there frequently is a queue there! (I have to send stiffened A4 envelopes, and they don't fit normal postboxes). In fact, I've warned one client that I'm going to have to start making an additional time charge for the service, because I can be queueing there for 30 minutes at a time, or up to 60 minutes including travel time. They've already closed down the sub-post office up by Beckenham Junction, which may explain why the main PO is in a place which some people find inconvenient.
I haven't used Sydenham PO that often, but on the occasions when I have, I've found the queue moves reasonably quickly.

Was in Sydenham yesterday at 13:30 to post a parcel - both self service machines were broken, apparently the engineer had been there all day, so they are obviously not that reliable. Only 2 tills were open - well it was lunchtime, but then i guess thats why there were 20 odd people ahead of me in the queue - 25 mins, oh the joy. I cant help feeling if there was proper competition there would be more people on the tills - as it is PO knows i just have to stand and queue - years ago i used to use sub post offices, but of course those have all now been closed

Re: IS SYDENHAM POST OFFICE CLOSING?
I'm in the post office now - it is heaving - 3 Windows open - queue all the way to door - both self service machines not in use (although previously when I asked about these machines I was told you need an assistant with you to use them and if there isn't one they don't let you use them - so self service is a bit of a joke). I'd hate to have to travel all the way to another post office for this tiny slice of hell. Joy is added to by children crying as background....
