I'm pretty certain that there was once a building to the right of The Duke, built in a similar style and of a similar size. I wonder what it was?
You may think the building to the left is the Duke, but I'm telling you it's not...

You're right, it's not. The Duke was at 94 Wells Pk Rd, not 88. However, there are several local instances (Fox and Hounds, Dartmouth Arms, Rutland Arms, Prince Alfred) where a pub was built or rebuilt to include adjacent shops/housing to make the development more profitable. Often the shops/housing were in a similar style to the pub.Falkor wrote:You may think the building to the left is the Duke, but I'm telling you it's not...
Right, those other pubs Steve mentioned are a good example. It's just I've always envisaged the Duke as being an individual building, and no doubt other people have built up the same picture in their minds, when really it was once part of a terrace. It would help if there was a clear picture showing the Duke alongside it's counterparts.

Next to The Duke, taking up part of what is now The Spar, was Bradleys, a butchers shop. Next to that was Walman's the greengrocers and a small grocery store called Whites that sold tobacco etc., as well. Then came a Barbers called Halls. (this went earlier) Then up 2 high steps took you up to a little shop that ended up selling car tyres etc., but before the war was a deli.
They were there until about the later 60s (maybe early 70s) when several shops closed and formed Whitrod's.
