This track is called Matamoros off their great new album 'Do to the Beast':
Thanks Rod, I liked the dramatic edge this number has.

(Sounded like some, almost Turkish riffs, going on in the mix too.)

For somewhat random reasons, I was thinking about Burl Ives this weekend, and on looking for him on YouTube, I learned to my surprise that it was he who first had a hit with Ghost Riders in the Sky, which I first knew of as sung by Tom Jones. So cue a collection of covers of this, including one truly bizarre version by Debbie Harry

Thanks Tim, it's certainly the kind of number that artists can inject their own flavour into. Here's yet another version by The Outlaws with yet another take on Ghost Riders. Even an opportunity for your Air Guitar if you feel so inclined..

I enjoyed the original Burl Ives version too.

Alison Krauss and Union Station - Good rendition of 'Man of constant sorrow' and as always totally acoustic instruments used. Most of us probably remember the tune (from Brother where art though and the soggy bottom boys). The song possibly dates way back to the Mackin clan 1888 Ireland but the first known recording by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky about 1913 as a 'Farewell song'. I wonder how many versions there have been?

Because I didn't realise until a few days ago that this was a reworking of a Jacques Brel song

here it is, and one I did know was

and one which he covered, having originally been in English

Seems an appropriate place to share a song inspired by Sydenham's Wells Park

I agree, Rod. Not sure about the performance, though - at first hearing, sounds a bit undercharged to me.

In response to the thread in the Pub about Bacharach

Dionne Warwick singing "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" was one of the first hits I was aware of; it's close, but I think I prefer "Don't make me over"

I love this because it shows the thought process behind a song construction

On Friday, before going to a funeral, I heard Colm Toibin's Desert Island Discs, which included this from Kathleen Ferrier

which I know well, and then, something I'd not heard before, her singing this from Mendelsohn's Elijah

Perhaps I should have.

It being Candlemas, how about a Nunc dimittis?

In fact, this was the piece I was looking for:

which I have recorded by the Tallis Scholars. It includes a setting of Nunc dimittis, but also this
Ne projicias nos in tempore senectutis cum defecerit virtus nostra ne derelinquas nos Domine /

Do not cast us away in our old age; When our strength fails us do not abandon us O Lord
from Media vita, which I like.

I'm a big blues fan and I was listening to some Memphis Slim recently, a pianist I'd never previously got round to checking out.

I was struck by the extraordinary title of this song. It's not often you get songs about writing songs. Pop-cultural postmodernism at its best!
