Rare view of Southend Lane

Post by Falkor »

This photo was published in a recent book about Lewisham & Deptford murders. I couldn't find it amongst the views at Lewisham Local Studies, so maybe they keep it upstairs...

Can anyone identify those buildings in the distance?

it's level so could be just before or after the railway bridge? (imagine Savacentre on your left) Not sure when the railway arrived. Sorry just a gut instinct.

You know where I think it is? I think it's looking towards the Lower Mill!

wherever it is there are no cars. Lovely. I think I can spot a lamp post?

It's at one end or the other - there are no shadows so can't work out any direction.

I agree; until the Bellingham estate was begun during the 1920s the only buildings in Southend Lane between the railway bridge and Bromley Road were two large houses in extensive grounds (Firhill Lodge and Southend House) and a small terrace (which is what I think we are looking at in this picture) near the junction with Bromley Road.

I've been working on the history of Southend and Downham over at the Downham forum, using sources similar to the ones posted by Will. I hope to have it completed in the next day or two...
