I absolutely agree about the danger - but is criminalising them the answer?
These are young men behaving recklessly. That's fun for them. These are young men not thinking about the consequences of their actions to others - or not caring. Again a common attribute at that age. Did we not share it a little at the time?
Sydenham Road/Kirkdale is not ideal for taking a spin with all those buses, pedestrian crossing and mothers with prams getting in the way. The trick is to try and divert their enthusiasm, their energy into making it even more fun without the downsides.
We spent a fortune building TNG, we spent even more building sporting facilities that were subsequently knocked down or sold off at bargain prices. Not that we need spend much on these lads. Their immediate predecessors colonised the concrete ramps under the South Bank for their fun. OK some people didn't like and some were greedy to evict them so they could make money by building yet more retail units. But overall they had fun and were afaik not knifing people or inhaling from paper bags.
So come back Melissa and tell us who these lads are and what we could do to give them more fun for less danger.

Re: Mopeds
Crikey! That sounds like a Brendan Behan depression quote. Maybe you're right though. Perhaps Sydenham should offer more adrenlin extreme sports in our parks, e.g. zip lines, rock-wall climbing or skateboard parks, or even a motorbike scrambling course. I don't know who would provide one, but films like Rollerball describe people going off their heads from boredom. Sydenham isn't exactly Stepford suburbia, but would I think it was if I were a teenager (with little money) or an adrenalin junky? Probably.sydenhamboy wrote:...[clip]...
I fear it's all they've got in their little lives. They get home, have a bite to eat - and it's out on the mopeds again!
What fulfilled lives they lead....[clip]...

Re: Mopeds
Last night a quad bike sped through a red light in the dark at speed at that junction of the high road with Newlands Park. One of these days there will be a serious incident.

I noticed a quad bike on the road in Silverdale this morning. It did have a standard licence plate so would be traceable. Maybe the one you saw had also and might have been caught on camera..

Re: Mopeds
There is certainly a frequent quad biker in our area. The noise of it makes it stand out above all other mopeds/motorbikes so much I don't even need to look out of my window, I know it's him by the sound of it.
Re: Mopeds
Hi,
Quick update: I have spoken to the police twice and provided some of the registrations of quad bikes and mopeds I've seen rising dangerously in Sainsbury's car park - speeding and doing wheelies while elderly people are trying to cross into the shop. I do feel the behaviour is crossing the line from fun to recklessly endangering lives - as 2 recent moped-related deaths elsewhere in London show.
I will be writing to the council this week, with the police references.

Re: Mopeds
Apologies, I forgot to add: please if anyone does see any dangerous riding - such as speeding through red lights, riding towards people on the pavement etc. please consider calling the police on the 101 number. The more information the police have, the better able they will be to identify times / places / registration plates, and the more pressure there will be to take action to bring the problem under control.
From my experience, it takes no more than 3-4 minutes to report, and it is helpful.

This is my first post on the forum. Just joined.
After frustrating emails to Police, I decided to do a net search on noise in Lower Sydenham, There it was. Quite a few posts with reference to mopeds and quad bikes. This has been on for about 2 years. I simply cannot work after 5.00 p.m. but still pay "a load in business rates". It seems anarchy to me. By the way, on occasions it also involves cars - normally Fridays but not frequent. It happens in Beckenham too - Copers Cope Road seems a racing track
Good luck to all

Re: Mopeds
Welcome. Yes sadly it has not got much better. Especially the extremely noisy quad bikes.tduarte wrote:This is my first post on the forum. Just joined.

I don't know whether you're talking about the same culprits as this thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13943 , or whether the two are different?
