A Land Without Music?

Post by Alan Taylor »

That's how German visitors described England in the 19th Century - since there were no front rank composers. In fact, English music has been prominent at many times in history, so we plan to celebrate this at our summer concert.

Saturday June 13th, 7.30pm, we will perform our summer concert in All Saints’ Church, Trewsbury Road, Sydenham. Tickets: £8, or £5 concessions.

We will perform English Music through the Ages. First, Forward to the Future, from Edward Elgar up to the 21st Century, with a piece written this year. Then Backwards to the Past, from Henry Purcell in the late 17th Century back to John Dunstable in the early 15th. We will end with Thomas Tallis’s amazing motet Spem in Alium for eight 5-part choirs, performed in surround sound with the choirs spread around the audience.

Really looking forward to this concert - the concept sounds unique and the acoustics in All Saints' will suit the musicians. I remember them coming before but the audience was quite small - they need to have a bigger audience this time!

I'm not going to be able to make this, which is a real shame. It's also an amazing bit of architecture inside.

Another concert coming up that I noticed recently was this at St Barts, as part of the Sydenham Arts Festival

THE QUEEN’S SIX
The programme this evening includes pieces from Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, Thomas Morley, Duke Ellington and The Beatles, among others!

It was said of us before Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep was even thought of. Maybe he would have said something different if it had been.

A land without music - with a question mark. We are going to show its not true, but it is the name given to England in the 19th century since there were no top rate English composers. All Handel's fault really. He set a fashion for Italian-style music, and the English couldn't compete and gave up for 150 years!

My sister met Nena a few years ago at a dinner prty in Berlin says she was really nice. Her real name is Gabriel. Apparently the german lyrics to taht song are far more edgey than the English tranlsation.
