What a shame Mary

Never my favourite pub , but it was loved by many.

Sign of the times . We have lost The Duke of Edinburgh , The Woodman , The Windmill , The Greyhound , The 2 halves etc etc etc.

Without decent Pubs , no community.

+1 Eagle. But as a relative newcomer can you tell me where the Duke of Edinburgh used to be?

I'm happy. At last a planning application from what looks like a really good architect, who'll sensitively restore and preserve the integrity of the building and bring some desirable high quality housing to Wells Park Rd.

#IHatePurelake. They destroyed Sydenham's Greyhound.

I can only assume I must have posted the wrong link.

This is the Talma we're talking about. The plans include an extension, a extra floor on the roof and basement apartments that will only be lit by glass in the pavement and that even a hobbit would find claustrophobic.

But everyone's entitled to their opinion. It would be a very dull, homogenized world if we all liked the same thing. I just don't see why it's necessary to destroy one of sydenham's most historic, and to my eye perfectly balanced, buildings.

But all I was going to do was post the link, so that people knew what was planned, so I'll bow out now.

I thought LBL were doing their very best to maintain buildings that were / are pubs , to be pubs.

Not my favourite pub , but keeps them out of other establishments.

Very sad. Let us hope The Windmill at least can be saved as a Pub.

It's going to be a pub still.

I live two doors down from it. I like the idea of it being a pub again.
However, there's no provision for residents parking (it's a car free development) /customer parking.
I'm not so much against the noise, this is London my friend, bit concerned about rubbish/smokers etc.

2 x 1 bed and 2 x 2 bed apartments.
ho hum.

Also: there is already desirable, quality housing in the area.
Yes it's a shame the land grab by the council led to the demolition of older housing in the immediate post war years.

I may have misread the application, but I think it is to refurbish and reopen the Talma and provide some additional housing above and below.

If the investment in the building encourages a responsible owner/operator to think they can run a nice pub here (which is considerate of locals) then I don't see how this can be anything other than good news. Although previously it seems like there may have been too many pubs in the area for any of them to make enough money to survive, there does seem to be a bit of a shortage now.

Sorry Steve

I agree , problem is so many people trying to close pubs , which are a valuable resourse for social cohesion .

It would be great if retained as a Pub to keep the community together and of course serve decent real ale.

I suggest that you ask one or more of the following:
- Our ward councillors
- Sydenham Society
- The planning officer at Lewisham Council dealing with the planning application *

* To find out who this is, follow the link to the planning application in one of the posts above, click on 'Further Information' and then look for the entry against 'Case Officer'.

The planning permission application was refused in early July: http://planning.lewisham.gov.uk/online- ... CAPR_74638

Meanwhile, it's still listed as for sale by these people, even though the name on the for sale sign that's still up outside is completely different (Paramount Investments): http://highfield-investments.co.uk/prop ... -se26-6ad/

We moved in nearby just over a year ago, have been wondering if there's any chance of getting a local (preferably without having to get it up and running myself). Highfield told me months ago that it was already sold.

Any ideas?

If any community backers would want to invest a share in restoring it to a pub, shout.

They are also a source of social neglect.
I'm not quite sure why there is any regret of the Two Halves closing - that place was a total disaster! Admittedly it has been replaced by the equally awful Tesco, but I think the latter wins by a short head. The Two Halves was truly dreadful.
The Talma could actually be really nice, and someone has mentioned that it is still going to be a pub, which is actually probably going to be more like a bar than a pub...

I went into the refurbed Golden Lion over the weekend. Looks great and it was pretty nice. However, taking on the Dolphin is going to be tricky (similar type of menu, similar types of drinks, similar furniture - (terrible music however!)). The food was decent although they need to differentiate themselves surely. I reckon they ought to specialise in doing really good family food - it's massive, so they can always segregate the areas if there are objections. The kids menu was pretty low key actually. They get a fair few mums in there in the evening according to my wife, so if they were to set themselves up that has an imaginative kids menu, I reckon they would be on a winner. The Dolphin is actually quite unfriendly to kids in many ways. Quite rightly I hear some say, but the Lion will surely fold if it doesn't make some dosh.

The Greyhound seems like there are no takers, the units around it seem even less attractive to people.

I think pubs are actually a bit of a problem, and despite the pub on the village green plus the church and post office being part of the community, with London becoming what it is, the more agile, inclusive bar seems to be a more popular thing.
