It's a well-known cliche that the fear of crime is greater than crime itself. This isn't helped every time there is a serious incident in Sydenham Road by irresponsible people such as MartinH regurgitating ale-fuelled fantasies from the denizens of local public bars.

I'm delighted that Savvy and others have managed to get the truth.

If you can't actually be certain what happened, keep quiet. Spreading wild rumours about machetes and deaths doesn't help SE26.

A real 'Angry from Tunbridge Wells' response there nasaroc. Ever considered he may have been on a wind up?

Which is why when it comes to serious criminal stuff its best for everybody to keep calm and only report what *you* know to be true with your own eyes or quote from a responsible verifiable source.

This is not the first, and probably not the last time an incident has been exagerated. Even worse if it was a joke that would be misunderstood. It is hard for me to decide whether to let unverifiable stuff stand on the basis that people do want to know what happened or cut it.

This time I made the wrong choice. Sorry.

I can echo what Nasaroc has said regarding the fear of crime being far greater than the actual truth.
I am in a position at the moment where I am privvy to a lot of information about violent crime and contrary to what I may have thought previously, working in this field has been very very reassuring to me. In the time I have been here, eight weeks, I have never come across one violent incident where the purportrator and the victim did not have a relationship with each other of some sort. It is sad for me to note from what I have seen that when it comes to young men stabbing each other, they are equally likely to have been the victim as the purportrator. They are all victims really. And please don't call me namby-pamby!! That is the truth. To talk about what to do about it is a different matter, and is a matter of long debate.
