Understanding the Child: Speech and Language and Creative Practice
Following on from our successful training 'Understanding the Child: Early Years and Your Creative Practice' in July 2014; the aim of the session is to provide practitioners with early years speech and language knowledge, which they can then, through a workshop, apply to creative ideas and arts practice.
This training may suit early years practitioners or creative practitioners wishing to apply speech and language knowledge to creative provision for the under 5's (for more information please see below).
The first part of the session will:
1. introduce the stages of typical speech and language development and how language emerges for children with and without communication difficulties
2. introduce adult – child interaction strategies based on the OWL (Observe – Wait – Listen) programme
3. give you some practical ideas for how to use narrative in small groups of children including those with additional needs (inspired by the Speak Out programme)
The second part of session will be facilitated workshops: in small groups we will discuss ideas about leading creative provision drawing on the information from the morning session.
