Meanwhile in Penge
Re: Meanwhile in Penge
Yeah Rachael. I'm sure it was just teething problems. I think they went the first week.
I'm looking forward to a trip to Shannon's followed by a nice pint.

Thanks - yes, Telegraph rather than Tavern...apols
Defo seems to be under some sort of construction - was in the garden cntr opposite yesterday and it had scaffolding outside. Good news that it is decent - always used to be, although admittedly haven't been there for about ten years

Re: Meanwhile in Penge
With all these pubs on our boarders, the Railway Telegraph and Honor Oak in SE23, the Constitutional Club in Catford and what promises to be a couple of decent pubs in Penge, makes it even more poignant that, Sydenham itself is so poorly served. It would be really great to have some more local competition for the Dolphin, which ain't bad, but as already said, is a bit pricy and the beer is mainly just so-so. It always amazes me that the Golden Lion keeps going, a miserable place where the turnover is so low that the beer is often stale. One day......

I walk past it every day on my way home. There are always people sat outside drinking lager. Never ale. Always lager.sparticus wrote:With all these pubs on our boarders, the Railway Telegraph and Honor Oak in SE23, the Constitutional Club in Catford and what promises to be a couple of decent pubs in Penge, makes it even more poignant that, Sydenham itself is so poorly served. I have not been in G L for about 5 years but over the years they usually looked after their beer well.. Unfortunately tended to be Courage.
It baffles me why people choose to drink a cold , fizzy , tasteless and overpriced lager , whilst they could have a decent craft ale.
Guess some people have no taste buds. SAD

Re: Meanwhile in Penge
I agree would be great for antic to get involved in Syd. The windmill, the regency club, the old post office or the greyhound would all be decent locations for them to consider I reckon.
Re: Meanwhile in Penge
I agree JMLF , but you have missed the best venue.
The former Walter Cobb up market restaurant.
I believe it is being used , or misused , at present as a so called early morning disturb the neighbours club .
This would be a great venue with the promise of 11 pm closing. Also pubs specializing in real ale very rarely if ever have any trouble...

Re: Meanwhile in Penge
I'de be amazed if Antic aren't weighing up Sydenham and just waiting for the right place to come up for grabs. They are ambitious and very keen to get a foot in every part of South London. They've just opened in Bromley (the Railway), are rumoured to be looking at Beckenham and before they got the Goldsmiths, bid for both the Alex and the Kent House in Penge.

Is the Bromley pub open. Must give it a try sometime.

Not sure. I've just asked to join the fb page and will let you know when they respond.
Re: Meanwhile in Penge
That's interesting, I hadn't realised that they have considered other Sydenham venues. Hopefully something suitable will come up soon.
Where is the old post office building?

Waled past Bromley Antic Pub this morning.
Grand Opening is 6pm on this Thursday , the 16th.
Anything like other Antic's will be a GEM.

Re: Meanwhile in Penge
Any chance of a postcode pls? I usually look things up on http://streetmap.co.uk/ (others map sites are available).
If opening night is 5 Nov, should we all bring indoor sparklers?

It's this one: http://goldsmithsarms.com/

It's just set back from the main crossroads of Penge High Street / Croydon Road / Green Lane, almost opposite the Pawleyne Arms
Big pub with big garden. Will be great in Summer
