Here is a bit about the performance:
Despite being neutral in the Second World War, Spain had its fair share of upheaval. The first European country to lose its empire, following a disastrous war with the US in 1899, the country nevertheless witnessed an outpouring of musical and poetic talent that was exported around the world.

However, in 1936 civil war broke out and despite the best efforts of the republicans, Franco (with the help of his fascist friends in Germany and Italy) triumphed, and ruled Spain for another 40 years.

The conflict was famous for the involvement of writers, artists, philosophers and musicians who fought against Franco as members of the now infamous International Brigade. They obviously made better artists than soldiers, as stories of their lack of cohesion resonated around the world. Great names were amongst their number – Picasso, Laurie Lee, Hemingway, even a young James Robertson Justice!

Desvalidas – the underdogs, bring you a flavour of the magical music and poetry of the age, some of it sad, some of it funny but always intriguing. Expect to be startled and surprised by a performance from two fine exponents of their craft, out to have a bit of fun along their journey from harmony to dissonance…
