Substation fire re-visited

Hi everyone,
I have been trying to find out some information about the substation fire that occured in Sydenham June 2008 - and in doing the searching, I found this wonderful forum.

Now, I have a question .. .. ..

Since that fire I have been having trouble with my house lights flickering.
Some of my neighbours too, and my son mentioned the Hob Goblin pub had the same trouble a month ago when he was there.

It didn't happen that often .. .. at first!
But just recently, its started to happen a least twice a week, several fast flickers and then one big enough to cause my computer to go off.
And I'm getting sick of it. Its like living in a haunted house.

Does this happen to anyone else in and around se23/se26?

And more to the point - who the hell to I contact about it?
I can't find anything even remotely relevant on the council's website, and EDF's site isn't exactly user friendly, unless you want to pay a bill (*sigh*)

Anyone help? .. .. . please

LivesNearby is correct in the advice given. It does sound as if you may be suffering from 'spikes' also...

I would suggest buying some cheap UPS units for your more expensive items. These regulate and protect the power to fragile devices such as PCs and TVs. It wouldn't be practical to have one in every outlet but I have one in the room where the PC sits and where the TV is in the sitting room.

Out of interest I'm assuming your wiring is sound? You've a modern RCD unit and have your paperwork up to date? I had my place rewired when I moved in and have a Domestic Electric Installation Certificate (think it's also called a Chapter 13? I think!) which is good for 10 years (I think) from the NICEIC.

Can't take any chances with wiring, especially in these old homes!

After I mentioned the problem several times to my landlady, (and you're right it is an old house) she eventually had the house checked (June this year) - and a new junction box put in. They found no problems with the wiring and the new RCD is just fine . . I do have an anti surge socket thingy at my pc outlet - none anywhere else though, but I will certainly get some more.

It seems it is most likely caused by the substation fire, as I (nor my immediate neighbours) never had the problem before.
Its getting a little tiresome now . . . I'd say the 'joke' has now long since worn very thin.
I'm so glad I found this forum - I didn't know where to start looking to get some answers and solutions to this.
