Watch out - clampers about...

Post by mosy »

Just a heads up that proximate to the College Road tollgate, a National Clamps warning sign has appeared. This might affect anyone collecting little ones from Dulwich College.

I wondered if the sign was a scam as it only gives a mobile number, but National Clamps is a country-wide company and there is much written on the Net about them., not all of which is flattering.

Seemingly (having trawled a few pages), the company acts for clients who employ them to ensure that people park properly on private land. Apparently some of their income derives from selling notices which act as a deterrent for people who'd otherwise park wrongly. Nowt wrong with that.

It would seem however that they tend in some places to arrive (or be there out of sight) instantaneously, clamp a car and then insist on a release fee on the spot.

Whilst I was perusing the sign, I asked a waiting car's driver what they made of the notice, which currently says clamped if on yellow lines or hatched boxes. "I don't know", she said, "but I've seen cars clamped if over the white line."

Edit: If the sign doesn't say that peeps (assuming it is a private road at that point) could be clamped for being over a white line, then no contract has been made and therefore wouldn't be valid. It's a legal thingy re contract law and "criminal" law. At the point of clamping though, the fact seems to remain the same - either you pay or they won't unclamp you.)

Now, if parked over a white line and hence on the pavement, most councils would happily give you a ticket (and rightly so). However, I'm not sure how a road can be both council and private at the same time.

Much dispute about how and when clamps were applied and even so-called "fine" tickets potentially illegally issued by National Clamps. Not too many people have received their money back (according to my trawl of the Net) even though having been proved innocent by the evidence.

Bottom line? If now collecting peeps at the tollgate, you now have a heads up. :)
