Postal Scam

Post by Wing »

Just in case you have not already heard

Postal Scam
Can you circulate this around especially as Xmas is fast approaching - it has been confirmed by Royal Mail. The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam:

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655 or ICSTIS (the premium rate service regulator) at http://www.icstis.org.uk/

Thanks for the reminder.

Here is the BBC version: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/4586756.stm
BTW the premium rate is £1.50 per min - that would be the price of not spotting the scam after 10 mins. Still pretty nasty.

<daily mail>So is Ofcomm's inability to control on this and other scams. They seem to spend more time tapping the telephone records of the innocent rather than going after the obviously guilty</daily mail>

The link given by Wing leads to the <PhonepayPlus> website (what <ICSTIS> is now called) where they have this quote prominently displayed:
Current postal scam warnings: If you receive a copy of an email warning you about an alleged scam associated with the number 0906 661 1911, please do NOT forward it to others. This service was shut down by us in December 2005 and is no longer running.
The email is, apparently, a hoax that began circulating just before Christmas 2005, and <some have certainly suggested it is best to ignore it>.

There is a comprehensive description of this scam/hoax on the <Urban Legends> website. The article ends by saying:
Although the specific warning e-mail... is out of date it represents a common form of telephone fraud that has been used in the past and will likely be used again, so the public is well advised to be aware of it.
So, although it is not a current threat it is one that we should be alert to.
