Anyone with experience of setting up such a service? To be honest, my question is more theoretical than practical, since I doubt if the people who could use the application that I have in mind will be set up to, but I want to know if it could happen. It's this -
I got an email from Lewisham's allotments officer with the number for riding stables in Lee where they want to get rid of a whole lot of (not rotted) horse manure, and they want to get rid of trailer loads at a time, to minimise the cost in terms of diesel and time. One place where this could work - and has in the past - is by delivering to a central location on an allotment site, and then letting the tenants barrow it away to their own plots. The stables delivering it had a site key, and so they could deliver at a time to suit them. It used to work like that at Kent House Leisure Gardens, although there was a problem - in some people's eyes - that the people who were down there most got to know when the manure was delivered, and bagged it all for themselves, so that tenants with full time jobs lost out.
So what I was thinking was that if the stables delivering had a list of mobile numbers for tenants on the site, and an SMS list service, as soon as they delivered, they could send out a simple message - maybe "Horseshit" , which would alert every possible taker, so getting their load distributed ASAP, and as soon as the delivery was cleared, anyone on the list could text back "More horseshit please!" or words to that effect.
