I succumbed to opening a Twitter account this morning: http://twitter.com/sydenhamtown
At the moment there is only a feed from the Forum which you could pick up more conveniently as a raw RSS feed. To be honest I am a bit uncomfortable as Twitter seems a one-way information system of leaders and followers. This doesn't fit very well with my ethos of trying to create an interactive community where anyone is equally free to express their opinion and the fun is in the discussion.
Or am I trying to hold out against an unstoppable medium? Your views and ideas on how we could use Twitter for Sydenham would be very much appreciated.

twitter etiquette
Twitter is more than just people tweeting about themselves. It's great when people understand how to use it.
It's about sharing content, sharing ideas and asking questions.
So for example I could ask for ideas on recipes for a stew - people following the Forum twitter could answer with their ideas or recommendations.
Using Twitter tools makes the whole experience a lot more interesting - because with them people can share links, photos, etc in real time with local people.
These are some of the tools which are available and an article discussing Twitter. It's really insightful and should help to explain how to get past the 'i;m taking my dog for a walk' tweet which is really boring.

Question to ask for local use is how many times have you missed a local event because you didn't book mark the event in your calendar or missed seeing the signs for it. With Twitter people can tweet about the event.. in the run up to it and during the event to let other people know its worth going too or not.
Lots of times I see notices for council meetings to talk about the road improvements on Sydenham High Street.. then I see the time it's scheduled for and there is no way I can go because I've got a meeting or working late. However if these meetings could be twittered then I could twitter a question in - because I am interested and do care about the traffic down this road - and also about the number of accidents that happen just over the railway bridge by Sydenham train station.
Social media enables people to make recommendations and comments about things which they can share with other people .... and gives people a chance to take part in something even though they may not be able to be physically there.
Hope that helps to explain how Twitter can be a really useful tool for locals to use and if used properly can create more of a community feeling.

Re: Twit?
As I don't use Twitter I had failed to notice the feed to http://twitter.com/sydenhamtown had failed last March. And no one else let me in on the secret.
It appears an issue with rss2twitter - the service which posts stuff from here on there. Today I switched it to Twitterfeed which is now working.
This all came about because I bought myself one of these cute little Android smartphones so I could have Web 2.0 in my hand ... worth it just for the cute Boris Bike app from the delightfully named 'Little Fluffy Toy Company'. Go get it even if you never plan to cycle central London.

Re: Twit?
I wandered away from Sydenham Town Forum for a while during a busy spell but your twittering brought be back and reminded me to resume my own Sydenham blogging. So thanks for that. I think it's great that this forum has a presence on twitter.
As I monitor twitter regularly I'm reminded to keep coming back here. Twitter for me is an excellent professional resource. It's a simple and effective way to monitor trends in my area of expertise and to keep abreast of interesting and important discussions and innovations. I now have a thorough awareness of what's happening globally in my industry and can easily stay on top of things where previously it was a time consuming and expensive effort.
Please, keep on twittering.

Good night.
