Events in Mayow Park
Hmm, well I better post here instead then.
My main concern, is that we will lose the pavilion.
The decision of the bowling club to take a short term and selfish view, and use their windfall grants to drag some ugly steel boxes into the park rather than repair the pavilion has made me reassess the older generation. It is quite shocking.
Apologies if they have moved in the knowledge that the pavilion has secured funding and its future, but it looks like abandonment to me.
OK these boxes are fairly well hidden, but would it be ok if people could extend their houses with some container boxes if they promised to plant nicely around them? No. Why should the rules be different for our park?
The thrust of masterplan should be the restoration of the pavilion, but there is little there. It will be very expensive as will the repair of the paths due to total neglect. A small cafe will struggle to meet its share of the on going maintenance let alone help fund this. Decent toilets are essential but not even a portaloo has been provided these last 10 years, so I cant see these being well funded either. And then there are these cricket changing rooms...
OK I know the history, but that was a long time ago before the area became densely populated. The oval is well used in the evenings and weekends. There is normally a large group playing football, and families just making use of the space with balls and Frisbees etc. If prime time is set aside for the exclusive use of 11 guys just standing around in whites, that will be a criminal waste of valuable green space.
Finally I'm concerned about the tennis courts, as there is nothing much wrong with them. If they are given a lick of paint but then are charged for, then this too would be a backwards step. Sport for all.
The new park keeper is a big positive and the enviroworks corner is interesting, so it is not all concerns.
I'm sure we could all come up with good ideas for the pavilion (in addition to the small cafe and toilets) - a study centre for schools? - I'm sure enviroworks could come up with plenty of good suggestions - but the bottom line is Lewisham will need to pay for it.
