This was mentioned by Raven Drone in the "where do you go thread".
I thought I would share some info I have with you on it.
A good photographer friend of mine lives and works around Peckham Rye. Infact I go over to the studio a lot which is 30 seconds from Bellenden Road.
Zandra Rhodes (anything black and pink) and Antony Gormley designed street lamps and bollards in the area. Southwark council got a huge chunk of money from the EU to fund it. The Gormley Bollards are the rusty fun ones on Bellended Road just outside where his studio is (although he hardly uses it now and has another up in Kings Cross). There are LOTS of artists around Peckham Rye.
There was a project by a local artist (Mark Folds) who started the whole 'Love Peckham' thing. He used to take old benches and fix them with art and sculpture. He now lives in Wales but is really into the whole local art thing. The 'I love Peckham' thing was adopted by the council (but lost a lot of it's craft and beauty). I don't think we should so 'I love Sydenham' as it's become a cliche and everyone is doing it (just in case someone suggests it!)
I'm trying to find out more about it and get more contacts.
There is a real community of artists in Peckham who are trying to make a difference.
So are there many artists in Sydenham (we certainly have loads of musicians...and no music shop!!!!)? Is there a need for Artists studio space in Sydenham? If so, where can we have this studio space?
The Bellenden Regeneration Scheme
I nearly replied to Raven Drone's post myself
I'd never been or heard of the area until visiting friends the other side of Bellenden Road last week for the first time. I have to say, I had no idea where I was and knew nothing about the regeneration programme but I was very impressed, thought the road was lovely and especially noticed and liked the street lights. Just lovely
It would be amazing if we could make our high street half as elegant

Has anyone considered canvassing the Neighbourhood Manager (I presume this is the Jane you speak of) about setting up a Business Imporvement District (BID) for Sydenham Road and Kirkdale.
This is a model that has worked incerdibly well in other town centres (or natural business communities) that need to invest in infrastructure that weill improve the visitor experience. A majority of businesses (numbers or floorspace) must vote and agree to an additional rates levy, which is then ringfenced to be spent on agreed collective priorities. This may be improved streetlighting, refuse collection, traffic caliming, signage, PR and promotion etc etc.
The BID becomes an independent democratic organisation working on behalf of business interstes and can then use the money cretaed by the levy to attract other funds and grants into the area.
Why not explore this option?
