SYDENHAM: WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON?

Post by leenewham »

I have heard some rumours recently so I thought I'd use the forum to try to get some confirmation on the following:

BELL GREEN.
I presume phase 2 is dead and buried, wut what about phase 3? Some plans were submitted to Lewisham planning for a garden around the building with water features and sculptures.

What's the latest?

HOUSE OF CURTAINS
What happens when The Girls House leaves? Is there someone lined up to take over? How come the 'turret' above shop was allowed to be removed in a conservation area? No-one aside from me and Ulyses seems to have noticed!

HSBC
I heard a rumour that it has been taken off the market. Is this true? Is the HSBC coming back to the high street? Anyone got any details for who is dealing with it? Can we contact them? can the empty space be used for the community or an art workshop or gallery?

BUDGENS/SYDENHAM MARKET
I heard another rumour that this is being let. Anyone know who too? If it's an independent let me know and I will do a 'what if' so hopefully it doesn't become a 'Candies'.

SHOPS WITHOUT SIGNS OR BROKEN SIGNS
I can't name them as they don't appear to have any. Is this allowed? Can the council do anything about it?

BUILDINGS NEXT TO DIY SHOP
Nope, not Kirkdale Books, the derelict buildings next to the railway. I understand that 'Jam Circus' has pulled out and they didn't sell at auction.

Any news?

EMPTY LARGE UGLY NEW BUILDING IN KIRKDALE
This has been empty since it was built. What's going on with it?

CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP OPPOSITE TAPAS BAR
I presume this is closing as Chrysler are in trouble (they filed for bankruptcy in the US and are being bailed out by Fiat). Most of the cars seemed to have gone. It would make a perfect DWELL showroom or similar. Any news?

That's all I can think of for now!

Maybe it would be worth emailing them, proposing the site?

I think what Sydenham really needs is a group of people who basically market it. People with a keen eye for detail and who are really in touch with what people want.

A pack (or even better a website) which included lots of photos of the businesses which have done well and some information about them, maybe some testimonials from the owners about their experience here, and photos of surrounding streets and parks, to give a better impression of who lives here and what the area has to offer generally.

If I recall rightly, the car showroom is to become a car hire place. I'm sure I saw it on the Lewisham planning site. Classy!

Not ideal I'll agree Wispy Wonder. Certainly between the bus shelter windows being smashed in and those helpful characters who 'keyed' the showroom windows; if Chrysler hadn't gone belly-up that place might have followed suit anyway...

Were I in the market for a new car I doubt I'd have gone there.

As for it being a car-rental I must say I'm sort of pleased. Occasionally if we need a car for longer than a few hours [roughly twice a year] we'll choose to hire rather than Streetcar. Anyone who has done the schlep to Lee High Road to suffer the hideous facility and customer-service of 'company X' will tell you this is slightly welcome news to have one here. For convenience, if nothing else.

Am I alone in pondering if Chrysler in lower Sydenham ever sold a car. Or had an interested party walk through it's doors.

I can think of much more profitable locations in south London to sell big American cars. Sydenham - especially 'lower' - isn't one of them.

There is no reason why SG Smith shouldn't sell Audis, Mercedes or Volkswagons, as they do at their other 8 outlets accross south east london, from the showroom.

I'm going to tread carefully here. Very carefully.

bigbadwolf; you're way wide of the mark.

In actuality the popularity of what I shall hitherto refer to as the 'Bentley copy' meant that although it had alot pushing against it [see broken glass outsides and scratched windows of previous post on this thread], the 'Jeep' showroom did quite-ish well.

christ [intentional lower case] this is about as racist as I get. Those who wanted an 'American gangster Bentley-lite' [Bentley copy] flocked to the showroom. Chrysler did well out of that model. Those who didn't mind the broken glass and the dead planting went there.

I think SG Smith do well out of their 'commerical fleet' of Mercedez Benz but bugger me if I don't refer to it as "the Benz showroom". But then I've oft been referred to as Hyacinth Bouquet!

You strike me as needing some education as to what you delineate as 'Lower' Sydenham. Are you plumbing into postcodes, parishes, wards or general inference?

Sydenham station is in Lower Sydenham, as is the Dolphin. But with Lower Sydenham Station I guess people think Bell Green is Lower Syders.

Or Upper Beckenham as some call it.

Or Even Lower Dulwich.

So anyway, what about those other 7 queries I had?

Although I am vehemently anti-religion, I find your standpoint interesting Leenewham.

If you consult 'a church near you' then you'll find Lower Sydders as only the streets that encompass the parish of St. Michael and All Angels [namely Adamsrill; Burghill; Highclere; and Winchfield,...easterly...]

In fact, it's the only parish that uses Lower Sydenham, the rest, all the way up to Sydders Hill just refer to plain old 'Sydenham'...

But yes, what of Lower Sydders train station? Where does 'Bell Green' start and end? Is Sydenham all the SE26 postcode? What of these hoighty-toighty "I live in Mid-Sydders" types who wish to dissaociate themselves from Lower Sydders.

A quandary indeed.
