Electric

Post by Annie »

Did anyone else have an outage of electric today?
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned.

We lost all power approx 1.30pm - 3.30ish, I would love to know what caused it,anyone with the answer? Thanks, :?

No Annie,

I did not notice any outage yesterday. Are there any workmen near to you? What have your neighbours said? Perhaps it was a local problem?

According to the Virtual Norwood website a large area was affected. [link]
The EDF phoneline said parts of Anerley, Penge, Sydenahm, Beckenham and South Norwood lost power due to problem with underground cable.
Some areas had to wait until 7:30pm to get electricity turned on.

I guess only upper Sydenham caught the outer edge of this. We (off Thorpewood) had a cut (why has this word 'outage' suddenly become fashionable?) yesterday afternoon - not very long, I don't think, possibly just seconds.

We lost power for a couple of seconds, at about 1-30, just off Lawrie Park Road.

I used the word "outage" Robin because it has been used here before, so I thought people on here were familiar with it?
Doe's it really matter what word was used?

Fishcox I live round the corner from you and we lost it for approx 2+ hours so you were lucky, unfortunately our gas heating has an electric thermostat,
always makes me laugh how we rely on the gas not going off,but the gas central heating is no good without electric anyway!

Not particularly, in this particular case. But isn't it quite interesting to note changing usage and to speculate about the reasons for it? I've looked up 'outage' in the Oxford English Dictionary, and I see that the word is first recorded in 1903, and is 'originally and mainly American'. I certainly didn't become aware of the word until a year or so ago. I tend on the whole to prefer to follow British rather than American usage, especially if (as in this case) the American word is longer and less elegant than the British one, as it so often is. ('Transportation' for 'transport' - why oh why?)

Having been involved with IT for many years now the types of words that get banded about are quite annoying and almost unpaletable, Phrases such as "We have suffered an outage" or "There is an issue with blah blah" have become very common in the modern age. Dont make a fuss about it, it's the way of the world.

Almost forgot to mention the reason they are unpaletable is because when they are directed at me it usualy means I have to do some work. :D

Ah, this might explain it - we thought we might have had some kind of electrical 'blip' as some of our electrical equipment was behaving oddly when we got home the other night, as if we'd had a powercut, but most things hadn't been affected - all our electric clocks which normally need to be reset after a powercut were still showing the correct time.

Most unusual.

"Hey buddy. Chill. Some, like, downtime is , like, you know, heading your way sport as we, like, enter the holiday season."

I think we've a fair amount to blame on our American cousins...especially TLAs and vacuous, meaningless sentences? I do alot of "face-palming" when I meet with my American colleagues. A 2hr meeting (or "face-time" as they term it) can be distilled down to one sentence. That, aside from wanting a "wet, skinny decaff vanilla mocha latte", they really don't have the first clue about anything...as their quarterly results consistently demonstrate.

@ Annie. It's incredible how reliant we all are on gas and electricity. A few years back in Winter we had a short loss of gas. No central heating, no real means of cooking (other than our electric oven), no hot water as even our kettle runs on the stove and we've a combi-boiler. No fire even as our open fire in the sitting room is a gas one as we're lazy!

Plenty of layers were worn that day.
