I hate selecting 'Newest First'!

Post by parker »

Does anyone else on here have the same feeling as me when everytime you check a topic on STF you have to go to the bottom of the page and select 'Newest First' as it automatically comes up with the 'Oldest First', am i doing something wrong and is there a way to change it so that the newest post is the first to come up when you click on a topic...??

if you click the black arrow icon next to the document in the 'last post' column that should take you to the last post?

This is a long running internet discussion. Should you drive on the left or the right? There is no absolute answer but people designing software and Highway Codes have to plump for one or the other as the default.

On the internet it stems from Usenet - the grand daddy of forum discussions. The latest post appeared first, and had to as the older ones expired. However, when it came to quoting the post being responded to (necessary as it may have disappeared) you posted below - so it formed a continuum. If a question was asked, the answer is below. Some people thought it should be the other way round but as, on roads, it is better that a convention (whatever it is) than none to avoid chaos.

Forum board designers followed the same conventions and forums have largely replaced Usenet discussion. It was possible to give an option to reverse listings so it was a big advance for the 'unconventional'. What they didn't do was make this a storeable option when members logged in. This has long been a requested enhancement. I don't know if they have included it in V3 of phpBB (the software we use). We will find out when I upgrade. A task which I scheduled for last Christmas but has been delayed by other Syd projects ...
