You may have noticed I have put an article on the new Met Police Crime Mapping Test Site here: http://www.sydenham.org.uk/news_crime_mapping.html
Any comments?

Mapping Crime in Sydenham
From MP's FAQ:
"Areas of London are colour coded to show crime levels in user selected areas relative to other areas of London. Specifically, areas are colour coded according to how their crime rates compare to the average for London. This is done using standard deviations - a statistical measure used here to calculate how close to the London average an area's crime rate is"
In other words they are not telling you.
I assume they are using crimes/population. Which may mislead at the sub-ward level where an area which is predominantly commercial will have a low population who may suffer few crimes but be marked as above average because of burglaries of commercial premises. The Kangley Bridge road area would appear to fit this hypothesis.
I should admit I stole the story from here:

(which also has an interesting comment page)

Generally speaking most of sydenham is a safe area that has below-average crime for the borough.
As you can see on the map, crime congregates around specific areas as you can probably tell for obvious reasons. The major intersection around Bell Green appears to be a casing example.
(you can see a greater detailed map if you zoom right in on the met's website)

It is strange around Bell Green/Lower sydenham station it spikes, could that just be due to the estates around there & the higher density of people (the crime rate could just be the same)?
It's all damned lies & statistics as they say, I'd love to see a patrol density map, how many times an actual police officer walked the beat there.

you'd find in high crime areas there are more police - (more calloutsRonski wrote:It is strange around Bell Green/Lower sydenham station it spikes, could that just be due to the estates around there & the higher density of people (the crime rate could just be the same)?

I'd hazzard a guess at why bell green is a higher area:
high population density (estates)
Communications hub (bus and train) - lots of people moving about
Shopping centre
Isolated locations - there are lots in the area.
All of the above are condusive to oppertunistic crime (eg. muggings) and planned crime (eg. drugs deals)
just my personal opinion...
