Sat. 24th - Walk the Green Chain!

Post by Ian Bull »

Hullo everyone,

Enjoy walking? Want to see the best landscape in SE London? What starts in Sydenham and goes to the Thames?

You probably all know of the 'Green Chain Walk', a footpath that begins in Crystal Palace Park. You might have wondered where it goes and why so many regard it as the best footpath in London.

On Saturday 24th the sixth Green Chain 'Megawalk' reveals all.

At average walking pace throughout we'll stroll the 21 miles to Erith, the Easternmost point of the Green Chain. The further you go the better the landscape gets and tired feet will want to keep going! We'll pass through miles of dense woodland and see views that extend right out to the North Sea. For much of the walk you'd have no idea that you are in a City, let alone London.

Yes, it's a little challenge but don't let this put you off. There's always pleasant company and the camaraderie sees everyone through to the finish.

We meet outside Crystal Palace railway station at 9.15am and aim to finish by 6.30pm. There are frequent trains back to London Bridge from Erith. There's no charge and no need to book. A packed lunch is essential. Some more details are here...

The walk is promoted by 'Walk London', the organisation that maintains Greater London's long distance footpaths on behalf of the Mayors office. Hundreds have done the Megawalk over the years including many from Sydenham Town. Every single participant has come away delighted.

Very highly recommended.

All the best
