Hi Everyone,
Here's a bit of shameless self publicity for my new book London’s Lost Rivers (Random House Books), which will be of interest to all of you in Sydenham as it contains a few pages on the Croydon Canal. Overall the "lost" waterways in the book covers the history & routes of 22 rivers,8 canals & 8 docks with maps & over 100 modern day photos.A sample chapter can be found on www.londonslostrivers.com
The book covers many other SE London locations such as the Effra, Surrey Commercial Docks, Grand Surrey Canal, the Rotherhithe Mill Streams, River Peck, Earl's Sluice, River Neckinger & Deptford Dockyard.
To promote the book Im giving a few guided walks including the following:
Sat 28 May – Grand Surrey Canal Guided Walk (from Peckham to Rotherhithe)
Starting at the old Peckham Basin walking to Rotherhithe via Burgess Park, Old Kent Rd, Deptford and Surrey Quays, taking in redundant canal bridges. timber wharves, mooring bollards & lock machinery. Walking past Chaucer’s mural on the Old Kent Road which references the Earl’s Sluice (another lost waterway), past the Grand Surrey’s junction with the Croydon Canal (closed in 1836 after only 25 years) and a look at some of the old Surrey Commercial Docks.
A fascinating walk through some of South East London’s beautiful sights (and some not so beautiful too…). Other interesting points along the route include, the estate where Rio Ferdinand grew up, old slipper baths, Millwall FC, scrapyards and the odd bit of dereliction.
Cheers
Paul
