With Spring (nearly) round the corner, local runners are shaking off the dust from the trainers and running in support of Sydenham wildlife.
This July the London Wildlife Trust (LWT) has 12 runners in the British London 10K Run and aims to raise £10,000 for their work to protect wildlife in London.
Sydenham Hill Woods (SHW) is just one of the many nature reserves managed by the LWT. For those unfamiliar with this local treasure off Crescent Wood Road, SHW provides an astonishingly rural setting to explore ancient woodland with over 200 species of trees and flowering plants, a multitude of fungi, rare insects, birds and elusive woodland mammals; including the recently discovered brown long-eared bat. You are also sure to find in the woods somewhat more man-made relics, including a Victorian folly and the remains of the railway line that ran to Paxton’s Crystal Palace. Volunteer days, regular guided walks and other educational events are all available - for further information visit: www.wildlondon.org.uk.
In order to maintain reserves like Sydenham Hill Woods, we value and need your support. A victim of its own success, SHW desperately needs to upgrade footpaths and erect internal fencing and educational signs to avoid endangering plant species.
Each LWT runner is being asked to raise £400 (and more if they can!). For further information about the London 10K run and possible sponsorship (and running) opportunities, please contact Sydenham Hill Wood volunteer, Sarah Eldred on sareldr@aol.com
Thank you for supporting London’s wildlife!
