Residents and visitors of DALSTON are invited to celebrate Dalston’s new transport connections and the continued investment into the town centre at 'Dalston Connections' - a free street party being put on by Hackney Council.
Dalston Connected street party will take place on Ashwin Street on Sunday 6 June from 12noon till 5pm.
Music from local acts, the chance to join in a tea dance, food from around the world and family entertainment will mark the opening of four new London Overground stations in Hackney which have brought better connections and faster travel to the borough.
The new station at Dalston Junction is part of a wider picture of town centre investment, with the development of more than 500 new homes, including affordable homes, a new library and public archive, a new public square and space for shops and offices.
Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, said: “We would like to thank our residents for their patience during the works and to celebrate the opening of our new stations by inviting them to a free street party in the heart of Dalston.”
‘Dalston Connected’ is being run by Hackney Council and supported by its partners Transport for London, the London Development Agency, Barratt Homes and the Arts Council England funded music project Global Local.
The street party will feature live music and dance on stage in Ashwin Street from three Hackney acts, including Katy Carr and the Aviators, Cut a Shine and Zong Zing Allstars. There will also be a Turkish Cypriot performance.
Street theatre performances will come from the Dave Chameleon Show, Jon Hicks and Bruce Airhead. Jugglers, stilt walkers and balloon modellers will provide further entertainment. Visitors can join in a traditional tea dance and enjoy dance displays from Hackney-based group The Bees Knees.
Caribbean, West African and Vietnamese food will be among the tasty treats on offer to keep visitors refreshed.
Information stands will give residents the chance to find out about other opportunities in the borough, including a chance to talk to members of the Council’s 2012 Unit about jobs, training, volunteering and more related to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
There will so be the opportunity to see the latest progress with the Dalston Square development, including the chance to view an exhibition of work by Hackney artists at the new library on Dalston Lane - due to open in Spring 2011.
