Post by squig »

Hello!

I've got a venue for Blitz- the Livesey Hall, and a date 7th and 11th September!

Next- anyone interested in attending this? Canvassing popular opinion...Don't be shy.

Also- I need your stories of the blitz in S London, esp Sydenham if possible...
pleeeease email me at:info@alexandracarter.com with suggestions and people to talk to- SCR are happy to be involved in this as well...

blitz- hit songs from 1940 with Alex Carter vocals and Serge Pachnine on accordion- and audio & film footage from the blitz, as well as local accounts, with a bar available at the venue.

Thank you all!
Alex

If I'm here it sounds great. Also there are lots of 40s type things in East London and with the East London line being open it would be worth promoting things up there.

The subject is perhaps too emotive not only of then (I was born after WWII so learned from family) but also of what is going on in the world now and the current hardship and suffering that people are enduring. What will you show? Is it this building http://transpont.blogspot.com/2008/12/l ... -hall.html with the Art Decor style memorial statue outside? I'm wondering if a reference could be included on how the war changed our culture, e.g. architecture, fashion in furniture and clothes, food pre/post WWII with both US influence and that from the countries of refugees. I'm not a lifelong SE Londoner though so am probably not representative of those who'd attend.

thank you for that

Hi Mosy,

Thank you for that! It's lovely to get a response about it-

I do understand that many people would rather not revisit the suffering that was endured during the war altogether; for this event, my aim is rather to focus on the inspiring and uplifting things people did to get through it, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the bombings.

While there will be a lot about it in the news at the time, it will be great to do our own recollection of what happened more locally- so we will be collecting stories from locals- I've got a nice one already- and adding them into the framework of the show.

Excellent thoughts about how the war changed our culture, I'll look into it.
Best wishes, Alex

Alex:

There were memories of just before the blitz, in Sydenham, this afternoon as we celebrated the 70th wedding anniversary of a couple from our allotments. Read on here - and sorry about the out of focus picture of the bride!
