Post by Tim Lund »

From Lewisham Council - the condensed version:

Residents can take their garden waste - in plastic or reusable bags - at weekends to Girton Road Car Park, Sydenham from where it will be collected by Lewisham and then taken for disposal. Open to residents from 9am to 12noon on Saturdays and Sundays. You should bring along proof of address and ID, otherwise you may be refused access to the service.

New weekend garden waste collection service

A new free service for residents, to deposit garden waste at key sites around the borough, has just been launched in Lewisham.

As part of its Waste Strategy, approved in May by Sir Steve Bullock, Lewisham Council is in the process of introducing a number of measures to increase recycling and composting rates across the borough.

Launching the new garden waste collection service this week, Sir Steve, said: “Between now and 1 November, residents can take their garden waste at weekends to key locations in Lewisham. Garden waste will be collected by our trucks and then taken for disposal.

“This new service is free and means that residents can get rid of their bulky garden waste easily, especially those living in the south of the borough who may find it difficult to get to our recycling centre in Landmann Way.”

The four locations, open to residents from 9am to 12noon on Saturdays and Sundays, are:

* Riddons Road junction with Mayeswood Road, Grove Park
* Girton Road Car Park, Sydenham
* Kitto Road, outside Orange Café, Telegraph Hill
* Laurence House Car Park, Catford

Residents should ensure that garden waste is presented in plastic or reusable bags to dispose of flowers and plants, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, leaves, twigs and branches up to four inches in diameter.

The Council cannot accept kitchen waste, vegetable peelings, soil, turf, stones or Japanese knotweed. No trade waste or trailers, vans or open back vehicles will be allowed.

The service is free, but residents should bring along proof of address and ID, otherwise they may be refused access to the service.

Garden waste can also be taken to the Reuse & Recycling Centre, Landmann Way, New Cross. Green garden waste bags can be purchased from any Lewisham library and arrange collection through CallPoint.

Some of the other measures being introduced as part of the Waste Strategy include:

* The recent launch of the street litter recycling service
* Replacement of large residential domestic waste bins with smaller ones, accompanied by a larger recycling wheelie bin
* Targeted promotion of waste minimisation activities, designed to increase resident awareness about recycling and waste minimisation in the borough

Some other ideas currently being looked at by the Council are a battery recycling service, and incentives to community and voluntary sector organisations to collect and recycle or reuse things that householders would otherwise throw out
