It seems that the owners of the Sun & Doves in Camberwell want to buy a freehold pub in Forest Hill (with the Forest Hill Hotel being mooted).

Yes we need to be pro-active.
I think we often do these 'forum wish-lists' and 'what we need is ...' and 'It's a shame not more businesses spot the potential in Sydenham .. ' etc. in the hope that someone out there will say: "Oh yes! we need to invest in this up and coming underrated zone 3 suburb - I'll tell all my groovy gentrification type business friends that I've found the ideal highstreet with its growing young professional demographic and supportive local community".
Ain't gonna happen. Because it's only us that reads these things. So we're passionate yet really, we just end up preaching the converted.
So the more we collectively write off to the sort of businesses Sydenham really deserves, and spread the word, the better.

There's been a lively discussion on SE23 Forum about pubs which started because the Forest Hill Hotel on Stanstead Raod is on the market... We - The people who set up The Sun and Doves a long time ago - are interested in sites in south east London generally but your views about where's good and what's not are really useful.
And if you know of a place that's a dead ringer for you - tell us and if we end up getting it we'll buy you a lot of dinners and pints to say thanks...

The Sun and Doves is a brilliant pub - have been there many times. You definitely should invest in the Greyhound site. Perfect bar location, similar in size to S&D and close to public transport and I think at the nicer end of Sydenham Road. Go for it guys. I also think the Railway is a great little investment if it were ever up for sale.

There are a few sites with potential in the FH, sydenham area. The Forest Hill Hotel may seem a bit off the beaten track to some, but you will probably have to do your own footfall estimates. You obviously know what you are doing.
The Woodman on Kirkdale is currently up for let. When it first re-opened many months ago, you used to see streams of people walking up Kirkdale to get their Sunday roast. Unfortunately a medley of circumstances conspired to its demise.
The Greyhound site is another potential site, but nobody seems quite sure how close the developers are to securing planning agreement for their proposals.
As i remember, there used to be a bar on the London Road opposite the Capitol pub. This only seemed to be open a few months and was then closed again. This would seem to be a good location in the centre of Forest Hill.
More successful pubs in the area include The Hob, The Dartmouth Arms, The Question and the Bird in Hand and Dolphin. All of these seem to have found a niche in the market. (And yes, there is a place for the Bird in Hand. Somewhat of a drinkers pub)
And i think there is another bar opening on Dartmouth Road, opposite the swimming pool (at least that's what the note in the window says)
