Sydenham Assembly - 7pm Thursday 5 March at the Grove Centre

Post by Chris Best »

Hopefully everyone living in the Sydenham ward has received a hand delivered letter through though their letter box inviting them to the fifth Sydenham Assembly. At this meeting we will be voting on five projects to receive financial support from the Mayor's Fund. There will be five presentations of 10 minutes including questions and answers:

Sydenham Arts Festival - Jonathan Kaufman
Sydenham and Forest Hill Youth Forum - Nigel Desborough
Silverdale Hall - Ray Brown
Rotary Day Centre - Lorraine De-Pradines
Sydenham Community Radio - Peter Aleksin

After the voting we will receive feedback on the following ongoing issues:
Earlsthorpe Mews - Tim Lund
Sydenham Road report - Barry Milton
Sydenham Approach - Barry Milton
Greening Sydenham Road - Pat Trembath
Street drinkers - Angela Hall
Mayow Park - Peter Rankin

Please come along and vote for the projects as well as catching up on progress on hot topics. The meeting is in the Grove Centre in Jews Walk - starts at 7 and we aim to finish at 9.

A very interesting evening in which 141 voted for their preferred projects from the Mayor's Fund.

I have video of all 5 proposals and the results which I will post. It requires the processing of some huge files so they won't all be ready this afternoon. Watch this space for the full report ...

Unfortunately I was stuck at work until almost 9.00pm.

I didn't get any hand delivered note down in Fairlawn Park about the assembly.

I live on Dartmouth Road. Again, no hand delivered note about the meeting.

Lee- Strange the note didn't get to your house. I spotted a number of people from your road at the meeting.

Alib- This is a Sydenham ward meeting. You are part of FH Ward.

Bensonby - It really doesn't surprise me.

and what is that supposed to mean?

Some of us might work jobs with very odd shift patterns, or have family commitments and so on...

Just because one can't make an occassion that only happens on one day every quarter it doesn't mean one doesn't have an interest in local affairs or issues.

(and I'm still waiting for a reply to my PM. I was very keen to take you uip on that offer in the street drinking thread)

Sorry ALIB - I wasn't suggesting that you should take no interest in the Sydenham Assembly, or attend its meetings - only explaining why you didn't get a notice.

The Assemblies are organised by ward boundaries. Often ward boundaries bear no resemblance to where people think they live. Most people who live along Dartmouth Road on this side of the library believe, correctly in my view, that they live in Sydenham not FH. Unfortunately, the ward boundaries don't reflect this.

It leads to the silliest anomalies - for example, Mayow Park, is in Perry Vale not Sydenham Ward.

But this doen't stop the Sydenham Assembly from discussing things which are strictly outside the ward boundary (Mayow Park was on Thursday's agenda, for example). Nor should it prevent people who live outside the ward from coming to Sydenham Assembly meetings.

I'm afraid you'll have to depend on this forum to alert you rather than a notice.

the main task of the night was the allocation of the Mayor's £50k funding to Sydenham projects. Five projects were put up. The speeches are here plus the result:

Sorry for the delay & quality. Uploading and converting half-gig files was a bit challenging.

Admin - Thanks very much for displaying videos of the appeals for Mayor's Fund. Very entertaining!

Do you intend to put up a report of the rest of the evening's reports? These included some very important pieces of news on high street refurbishment, greening of Sydenham Road, Mayow Park improvements etc which will be of great interest to those unable to attend the meeting.

If you are unable to put up this report, I am very happy to do so.
