Hello.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me where to start with my query!

My grandad used to live in Sydenham and he appeared in the local newspaper in 1936 for his cricket skills. He would love to know if there is any way that anymore information on this can be found out as over the years the newspaper has been lost.

For old newspapers you should contact the Lewisham Local History Centre. They have microfilm of The Kentish Mercury, the Sydenham, Forest Hill & Penge Gazette and the Lewisham Borough News covering the period you are interested in.

If that fails there is the British Library's newspaper collection at Colindale.

Did your grandfather belong to a particular club? Some of the local cricket club records have survived.
