Question for Steve re: 1870s maps
Please can you tell us if either the 1876 Bacon or 1877 Stanford maps cover Penge? Also, do you know how far south and how far east the coverage spans? Any help would be much appreciated!

Sorry, been away...Falkor wrote:It seems Steve hasn't spotted this topic yet, but I've managed to find the 1877 Stanford map, and it just about covers Penge. In fact, the coverage is very similar to the 1862 edition. Still no sign of the Bacon map...
This scan is from my copy of one of the Bacon's maps (there were quite a number of them produced during the 1870s). As far as I can work out, this version is dated c1877, and this is as far south as it goes.
Thanks mate; much obliged!!! Hope you had a nice Easter break...
Unlike the Lewisham borough, Penge doesn't appear to have any large scale maps during the 1870s or 1880s. It's even worse where I'm living now... The 1799 map has less information than for the innner boroughs. Also, there is no Rocque map for the Georgian period. Basically, all we have is the tithe map, 1860s then 1890s Os maps.
