I'm sure this has been discussed previously somewhere. But if the gasometers next to Sainsbury's are not in use anymore, why do they change in height?

They are still in use aren't they? I had always assumed they were in use and am pretty sure was actually told that as well but who knows when!

Surprisingly the gasometers are used to store gas.

At one stage when this country was rich in natural gas there was less need to store. Now we buy in from overseas there is a need is to store. When it is cold more gas is used and the gasometers reduce in height.
