Kirkdale
Hi I was just wondering does anyone know how old the block of flats opposite the kirkdale learning centre have been on that site and possibly what stood there before them. Thanks for all the information you can provide in advance
I can't think where the Kirkdale Learning Centre is? If it's the block of flats I'm thinking of then check this pic from the recent post about Lower Kirkdale pics:
If it's the block of flats near Halifax Street (Denham Court?) then check this topic:

I imagine you are referring to Brickwood Close. If so, this map shows, circled, what was there in 1914:
The turning to Charlecote Grove is at the top, Dartmouth Road at the bottom and "School" is the learning centre.
These houses, two semi-detached villas and a terrace of four small cottages known as Albert Villas, were probably demolished in the 1960s to make way for the present buildings. Unfortunately I don't know of any pictures of them; <this> is the best I can do. The houses were behind the fence near where the horse and cart were standing:

Kirkdale Learning Centre AKA KELVIN GROVE SCHOOL! Now I know!!! (Or is it the nursery type school beside it where the Kelvin Arms pub stood?)
I would not have been able to help anyway...

Fascinating stuff! I've learnt something new today... Never seen that pic before; thanks for sharing with us.These houses, two semi-detached villas and a terrace of four small cottages known as Albert Villas, were probably demolished in the 1960s to make way for the present buildings.

Depends, there's pen and wash which would be monochrome, and the shadows under the trees are very harsh - but by the look of the grass, the tone is too even, and I suggest pen and watercolour.I wonder if that illustration was done in colour?
Now, If you knew the source, you might be able to track it down and see it with your own eyes!

Well, the likeliest Denis Dalton I can find, edited The Canals Book '71,
Link House Publications, 1971, which are now in Dorset, though they were taken over in 1984.
Course could be a red herring.
There is a Treasurer of Repton Village, I can imagine someone with watercolours lining the walls of their cottage.
You could go down the genealogical route, though he could have passed away and the painting donated to Oxfam. Such is this kind of research.
When were Local history materials kept at the Manor House, from when till ? The writing and stamp looks 50-60's though librarians always seem to be from another age!

It's a watercolour. Denis Dalton is, at the least, very elderly and moved from the area many years ago. I have no idea what became of his picture. Anyway, there is a colour version <here>.

I'm pretty sure that is the large pair of villas included in the circle in the 1914 map above. Clearly, the small terrace was demolished first to make way for the present block of flats, then the larger pair were demolished when Brickwood Close itself was built.Falkor wrote:Is that building on the right of the flats still there? I spose I better check a modern aerial...

I'm not saying, but I will mention the nearest building, just left of centre beyond the donkey on the verge. That still survives as 89-91 Kirkdale:Falkor wrote:For Terry and everyone else, can you figure out: what is the rarest thing about the view in that painting?
