Parents/childrens groups?

Post by scott.l.hamilton »

I have just moved into a house on Venner Road and I was wondering if there are any local parents/ baby toddlers groups? We have a 3 year old daughter, (in april at least) and a 15 months old son. We would be very interested in meeting up with other parents.

BTW: moved here from West Dulwich and love it so far. And how could we say no to a house that is on Venner Road ( venner is Danish for Friend) and close to Penge ( which is Danish for money). Also, Kirk is danish for church. Worthless facts! :D

Hi Scott, welcome to Sydenham. I love it too!!!

I used to take my daughter to one at Penge Family church which is only about a 20 minute walk away from where you are. It is on the corner of Green Lane and Parish Lane.

It looks pretty bleak from the outside but is really warm and welcoming insdie. They have lots of toys, craft activities, singing, parties at xmas etc, toast and drinks for the kids and tea, coffee and toast for the parents (which always tasted much better than any I made at home!) for a small donation - 50p or so. My daughter is at nursery when it is on now, but I'm pretty sure it still runs on Wednesday mornings from 10 to noon.

Hi Scott,

My daughter, 2 and a half, has loved Caterpillar Music which is held in The Grove Centre on Jews Walk on Wednesday mornings. I think there are two classes broken into age groups. Phone 0870 199 90 90. It's all songs, puppets, musical instruments. Have fun doing the Hokey Cokey or whatever they call it these days!

- The libraries (Sydenham and Forest Hill) both have weekly pre-school reading time groups with library staff (not sure which day, but pop in and ask - and they're free).
- Horniman Museum has a weekly Friday morning drop-in for parents/ carers with little ones - free again.
- The One O'clock club in Crystal Palace park is run by an experienced nursery school teacher and is very popular - the entrance is opposite the end of Sydenham Avenue.
- Peter Pan playgroup in the community hall next to the Sainsburys up at Crystal Palace meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10ish - I think they have a waiting list but might be worth investigating.
-- Also try the directories on www.familiesse.co.uk for more children's activities, and their Out and About listings.

The Under 5's library group at Sydenham is every Tuesday in term time between 10 and 10:30am.

It usually consisits of a couple of stories and songs. Recently a new Irish man has been bringing his guitar in and strumming along to requests which has proved quite popular. Occassionally, if he's not available, then some colouring-in sheets are produced with a literay theme, then some stories.

Every other week the Lewisham Toy Library based in Bellingham used to visit before Christmas, although there was a rumour this might be ending shortly. This would normally follow the story session until around 11am. Loads of new, clean toys are available to play with (not take away).

I think a similar group meets at Forest Hill on Tuesday mornings, too.

There's also a toddler group at the Philip Neri church hall on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30-11:00am.
