I am currently tracing my family history. A branch of my Tasman relatives were living in Walmer house in Sydenham at the time of the 1881 census. James Tasman had been a Packing Case maker and had benefitted from his Father's Will in 1840. James' son Edwin Robert Tasman became secretary to a company, possibly a bank and is found sailing into Elis Island on board the SS Teutonic sponsored by the Bank of Montreal in 1903.
This branch of the Tasman family seems to have done quite well for them selves. My branch continued to live in the East End, the family originally coming from Shoreditch.
If anyone with information on Walmer house, I would be pleased to hear from them.
I would also be very interested if anyone has any information on the Tasman family in the area.
Thanks

Walmer House and the Tasman Family
Walmer House was in Perry Hill, which now comes under Catford (SE6). Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any photos that show this building, although you might like to check out some old photos of Perry Hill:

According to one source Walmer House was built in 1856. In 1858, if not before, James Tasman was the occupant. Street directories and poll books list him at Walmer House until 1875 and he was, as you say, still there in the 1881 census. Strangely, I cannot find him, or any occupant, at Walmer House in the 1861 and 1871 censuses.
