Logs

Post by sparticus »

I need a new source of logs for our open fire, to be delivered. My usual source has closed his business. Any recommendations please.

Tree Reasons were very friendly when they chopped down a tree for us. I believe they also supply logs

Be careful, Lewisham is a smoke free zone. It's an offence to produce smoke from a chimney, furnace or boiler.

Unless you use smokeless fuel or have a wood burning stove that is HETAS approved for use in Smoke free zones, you could get a £1000 fine. We have a HEATAS approved wood burner and it's brilliant. It's far more efficient than an open fire.

It might have been more helpful if you'd told me where you get your logs instead of giving me a lecture on the law surrounding open fires in Lewisham. I'm well aware of the law and the technicalities of HETAS appliances. I don't give a toss. One of the few illegal pleasures left to me in my dotage is to sit in front of my illegal open log fire and smoke an illegal splif.

Oh dear, how disappointing. I've always admired Sparticus's posts and have thought of him as a kindred spirit. But now I see my idol has feet of clay.

Nah, just a sense of humour, so he should tell us where he gets his spliffs

Can't help on logs. Chippings for bbq's which fall outside of "smoke free" regs ironically cost an arm and a leg. Just had latest utility bill. Fish oil fire in an igloo anyone?

Sorry Sparticus, I actually thought I was being helpful!

When I moved here I wanted an open fire but found out that it was illegal and could face a fine. I wasn't trying to lecture you.

I got my logs from various sources on local forums, people who had trees chopped down and ebay. Everywhere I looked was about £60 for a large bag of logs. I couldn't find any cheaper, a lot we far far fare more expensive and what was quoted was often far more expensive when you called them due to 'moisture content' etc.

Obviously, if you are already aware of the above, please take this as me trying to be helpful rather than lecturing you about something you already know about. Unfortunately my powers of ESP are sadly lacking at present, or perhaps I wasn't able to connect with you due to your choice of inhalant.

also, just in case you're not aware, one shouldn't really burn chipboard or mdf offcuts, or those blue pallets.

a lot of 'firewood' sellers on ebay, the ones that seem ridiculously cheap, are selling this stuff, and it's full of chemicals that are either illegal to burn or incredibly toxic and dangerous to ones health - so stear clear. They are also usually using it as a way to get rid of waste materials which they otherwise would have to pay to dispose of. But some people either don't know the risks, or don't care and keep buying the stuff.

unfortunately, like most things in life, if you want to experience something nice, you have to pay through the nose for it.

for most people reading this, if you've got mains gas, that's far more efficient, cheap, economical, etc, etc a way of getting fuel to heat your house. unless you can get free wood, and you don't have mains gas, a wood burning stove is gonna cost you more.

Sorry Robin. Not really a suitable rejoinder on my part for Town Cafe. I hope I can recover your valued esteem somehow.

So what about smokeless briquettes - can one get a reasonable deal on those? It looks like it might be a cold one and a real fire a useful supplementary.
Do the same suppliers also sell them?

Found this detail in an article in The Guardian Online

"The Wood Fuel Co-op has the bigger selection, while White Horse Energy is marginally cheaper. The latter sells a pallet of Nielsen Briquettes, the cheapest good quality ones we have found, for £205 for 960kg. Its Excel Briquettes, rated 5 stars by users, are £265 a tonne delivered. The Wood Fuel Co-op, meanwhile, has 910kg of its very well regarded Premium Hard briquettes for £267 delivered. Buyers get 91 10kg packs – these are some of the longest burning out there, and can be broken. It also offers an excellent pick and mix service."

Too many for me to store unfortunately so suspect I will end up paying a fortune for a handful!

could you create a cooperative localy, pool your resources, buy in bulk, and then split equally when it arrives?
