Confusing enclosure

Post by Falkor »

Can anyone help me figure out which roads, including the exact stretches, are presented in this Enclosure Award map of c1812? I thought Perry Rise was also known as Glovers Lane, and Perry Vale was known as Pery Slough, but the modern roads don't appear to fit the shape of the roads in this map:

My uneducated thoughts on this:

I suggest the 'From Sydenham Common' end of Perry Slough on the map is the 'Forest Hill' end of Perry Vale, as Forest Hill was pretty much built on Sydenham Common, and the Bell Green side of Sydenham had already been enclosed.
Therefore the map is not N/S orientated as far as Perry Slough is concerned, rather E/W top to bottom.

Glovers Lane was the name of Perry Rise according to Rocque (who was not very good with road names, so I'm not entirely convinced.)
The problem is that the part of the map that covers Glovers Lane seems to be draw N/S orientated, and it has been bodged onto the Perry Slough map.
Perry Slough looks very odd near the intersection, with a round 'bite' out of the road where the road should be turning right into Perry Rise/Glovers Lane.

So for my money, you are correct and they have joined Glovers Lane to the wrong side, the wrong place and the wrong orientation to Perry Slough. There was no road that took a left at this point on Perry Slough. [strike]Woolstone Road did not exist then.[/strike edit: Although happy with this post, I think I'll retract this bit about Woolstone Rd]

By the way, thanks for all your posts. I'm not really qualified to contribute very much, but they are very interesting.
