A letter received this morning from Transport for London indicates that TfL have decided that an extension of Croydon Tramlink to Crystal Palace could open in 2013.
TfL consulted with the local community in Anerley last autumn about three possible routes. According to TfL, 67%of those who responded favoured a route to the bus terminus on Crystal Palace Parade coming up the hill through the park. TfL state they intend "to apply for the powers to build the extension in 2009 (sic) and subject to receiving Government approval and funding, the extension could open in 2013".
They are now working to select the preferred route, as well as developing a route for the rest of the link. They will be looking at the route which is best overall, taking into account the cost of construction, passenger numbers, environmental impact and the views of residents and stakeholders outlined in the consultation. A route for the extension will be decided towards the end of 2007.
TfL say they will shortly be distributing the first in a series of newsletters to local residents that will keep people informed as the project develops. The arrival of Tramlink is already another "hot potato" subject with a number of people having strong feelings about the route coming through the park.
The LDA and Latz + Partners do not have any influence over TfL but in the Masterplan for the park, provision has been made to allow for this possible route.
