Dreadful trip home

Post by raymondus »

Did anyone else have a whale of a time negotiating the ride home from London on the trains?

I thought I was being clever when I got onto the reverse loop at Victoria. However, once we reached Balham, they calmly announced that the train would be diverted back to London Bridge fast from Tulse Hill. You would have thought they could have told us that at Victoria so we could have taken the bus! No matter - we were fortunate with the buses at Tulse Hill. I read something about a tree down on the tracks near Sydenham station? Any news on that front?

I panicked about 5pm after hearing London Bridge station was closed (I really needed to get home on time last night), and instead went from Victoria to Crystal Palace and took a bus from CP. I think I got lucky as I ended up with a very speedy journey home.

I had heard that both New Cross Gate and Sydenham stations were closed following damage to the roof and a tree on the line respectively. However my other half travelled from NXG to Syd with no problems at about 5.30pm.

At times like this travel information can be really appalling - although I'd heard London Bridge was closed, I couldn't find confirmation of this on any rail or travel info website.

I travelled up to London Bridge last night at 6 pm and although trains were "delayed" there was a service - I think it had just about come back on stream. I understand there was a tree down somewhere on the line south of Sydenham and also that during the day London Bridge lost part of its roof.

I also saw two trains stop at platform 2 as I was waiting

By 10.00 pm the trains were runing normally on our part of the line (or so it seemed) as I caught the 10.04 out of Charing Cross which left on time.

Got the bus instead of risking the trains! Took about an hour so not too bad at all. Wasn't until I was on the bus that I heard London Bridge was closed but had read earlier that there was something on the line at Sydenham.
All seemed to be back to relative normality this morning, although all the trains I saw, inc my own, seemed much less croweded than usual so I guess a lot of people have seized this as an excuse to take a long weekend!

This might have had something to do with your problems

Pot luck that we catched the last train out from Sydenham station before they closed the line.
