Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Looks like the work is in progress to alter the roundabout at Cobbs.
Much marking of the road and pavement has been done, and surveyors there this morning with their equipment.
From the markings, it looks like it is going to be remodelled and moved, so it will be interesting to see what we are left with....

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
It's in a very different position which is interesting,
Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Can someone put a link to the plans and could we have it pinned now the works are about to start? I think it would be very good to be able to compare and contrast as things progress.

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
From memory, at a meeting for Sydenham Traders a couple of weeks back, it was stated that the roundabout was to be moved temporarily whilst other roadworks in the area were taking place in order to allow buses to turn.

So are they demolishing the roundabout then installing a temporary roundabout rather than temporary lights? Interesting.chrisj1948 wrote:From memory, at a meeting for Sydenham Traders a couple of weeks back, it was stated that the roundabout was to be moved temporarily whilst other roadworks in the area were taking place in order to allow buses to turn.

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Very worries to see marking for ramps at regular intervals?
I do hope these are not going to be speed humps.
Would hate to think out tax money is going to be used to ruin the high street!

Here is the link to the plans. The zebra crossings will be raised to pavement level - does that account for the markings for ramps?

I'm please to see that, at the other end of the regeneration strip, the junction at the bottom of Mayow Road is to have an Oxford Circus style 'all red' pedestrian phase. That junction is horrible for pedestrians right now. All those barriers and phasing, Bleeurgh.

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Does this mean the high street regeneration works are starting? Really? Finally??
Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Excuse my ignorance but not clear from the plans whether there is at last a crossing or lights to aid pedestrians crossing Newlands Park.
This is a very difficult place top cross.

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
It looks to me like it also has an 'all red' pedestrian phase, where all traffic is stopped in all directions for pedestrians to cross. And I think this means the split crossing with the island past Newlands is being removed.Eagle wrote:Excuse my ignorance but not clear from the plans whether there is at last a crossing or lights to aid pedestrians crossing Newlands Park.

They have started marking up for the crossing there. The plans state that:Eagle wrote:Excuse my ignorance but not clear from the plans whether there is at last a crossing or lights to aid pedestrians crossing Newlands Park.

Signal junction completely
redsigned to incude:
• An ‘all-red’ pedestrian stage
• Crossings on all junction arms
• Crossings are direct with no
central refuge
• Additional lanes to improve
junction capacity.

Looks like it is those pedestrian crossings (I think), I just hope that the up and down ramps are sufficiently gentle that you don't ruin your suspension going over at a perfectly legal 30mph.
To be honest though there seem to be more ramp marking than perdestrian crossings shown on the plan? On the little hump back bridge where the pedestrian crossing is currently.
I will double check next time I'm out and about.
Can you confirm that there will be no sleeping policemen introduced as part of the redevelopment.

I'm no expert - perhaps Chris Best can pop back and comment on that?

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
From memory of the first exhibition concerning the improvements, which was a while ago now. The pedestrian crossings are intended to be stepless (for pedestrians). They had a special name for the type of road ramping to be used (exponential??), which is intended to minimise the disturbance to drivers. They are not supposed to act as speed bumps.Bazman76 wrote: I just hope that the up and down ramps are sufficiently gentle that you don't ruin your suspension going over at a perfectly legal 30mph.

As far as I recall a speed limit is a maximum not a minimum speed. You must drive for the conditions and 30mph at a roundabout probably to fast.
I would not think you would get away with a claim for a damaged car.

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Indeed but I was not talking about taking a roundabout at 30mph?
Rather the new ramps they are introducing at the pesestrian crossings? And in case of any doubt only when they are clear of perestrians

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout
Point taken
Guess only a matter of time for LBC to bring in 20 mph as other boroughs have done
