A Week last Friday, 01:30 in the morning a young female was mugged on a street just off of the top of Newlands Park. She was attacked by a male and had her rucksack ripped from her shoulder.
I am reliably told that there were witnesses in a nearby house (young men) who failed to help and were seen laughing at the victim. It is unclear as to whether they were involved or just spineless/heartless.
Another resident from another household offered her shelter when she was heard screaming
I think the victim lives locally and I wanted to offer my condolences by way of support and also to warn others. The behaviour of these young men is despicable. As a female living alone I feel somewhat vulnerable knowing that there are people with a complete disregard for the safety or the well-being of others living close by.
Street Safety
Re: Street Safety
I hope you have reported the young gentlemen ( or not ) , to The Police.
Re: Street Safety
Unfortunately there is no "good Samaritan" law in this country. There is no obligation to help another person in distress or to intervene in any way I'm a crime in progress. It's wrong - but thats the law.Eagle wrote:I hope you have reported the young gentlemen ( or not ) , to The Police.
Fortunately attacks like this are relatively rare. However, it always pays to be on your guard and be aware of your surroundings: walk with purpose, try and refrain from being on your phone or with headphones in, be aware of people around you and if you feel uncomfortable cross the road, go into a shop, approach a front door etc. keep to well-populated roads if possible, walk with someone else if possible, and if the worst does happen then your health is more valuable than your phone or wallet.
If you are mugged, call 999 ASAP: don't wait until you get home. Try and remember something distinctive about the person "black male" or "white female" could be many many people... Look at their shoes, anything distinctive? (they can't be changed very easily), try and remember one or two dostintive characteristics... (tattoos, teeth, scars, distinctive clothing)
Stay safe out there: but be sensible and don't let fear unreasonably inhibit your life. You're probably at more danger of getting knocked over than seriously hurt in a street attack.
