We are accustomed at this end of the borough to the inevitability of road works and the traffic control measures that come with them.
In the last year or so it seems however, that bus stop closures alongside these measures are more frequent and now almost universally it is the case that TfL do not make any attempt to provide temporary bus stops.
Space is always at a premium for setting up of temporary bus stops by TfL and it is recognised it is not always easy to make temporary arrangements. As we are witnessing in Sydenham now, several bus stops in sequence are closed and no temporary bus stops have been setup, leaving excessive distances between the stops that are not closed. For the elderly and others who are less mobile, this is punitive.
TfL should adopt their previous practice of providing temporary stops when a permanent stop is closed - or at least they could make a serious effort to do so. Can LB Lewisham, as the relevant highways agency, call upon the design of temporary traffic control measures to include the provision of temporary bus stops? Or withhold the granting of a road work permit until the omission is corrected - and/or take the matter up directly with TfL?
This step would be viewed by many as being essential.
Bus Stops - Temporary or otherwise
Re: Bus Stops - Temporary or otherwise
Most bus stops around here and in London generally are positioned dangerously. In other parts of the country their locations would be rejected after the local Police object (on the grounds of Obstruction of the Highway).
Then we have the ludicrous situation where a bus lay by was removed and paved over to create a large, unnecessarily wide pavement. A central island was created alongside meaning buses can ONLY stop by obstructing the Highway.
Only one conclusion can be drawn. TFL and LBL are hell bent on preventing traffic flow whereas it is their statutory duty to ENSURE traffic flow.

What sequence is this, please? I haven't been up the top end of Sydenham for a while now.JGD wrote: ↑20 Sep 2024 08:36 Space is always at a premium for setting up of temporary bus stops by TfL and it is recognised it is not always easy to make temporary arrangements. Re: Bus Stops - Temporary or otherwise
Bus stops closed through the week outside Lidl and Newlands Park left a very long stretch for many routes.
It was observed by end of business Friday the stop at Lidls had re-opened.
